Web Design Principles and Theory

This site is about evidence-based searching.  It  focuses on the types of articles that are considered "evidence," and how to find the information in Pubmed. PubMed is the gold standard database for searching the medical and health science literature. The learning module is for healthcare practitioners some of the concepts but the audience will have some understanding of how literature is used for improvement in the healthcare setting.

Web Design Principles

I tried to keep the colors consistent on each page, especially the headings.  I changed the colors for some important concepts like Boolean operators where I needed the text to stand out.  All of the basic information is centered. I tried to keep the font basic and black for the smaller fonts so that the high contrast would make it easier to read.  I left a lot of white space. Webnode’s design features made navigation easy. The  homepage was easy to find and way finding was simple. The links to webpages are underlined and all of the media is “turned-off” to allow the user to choose what and when to play. There are a lot of concepts reviewed on this site so I wanted to keep the design clean and simple.

Multiple Intelligences
  • This website has many multimedia features for different learners.
  • Videos are one of the best ways to show the process of database searching.  I’ve included many video tutorials of the PubMed on this site to demonstrate the features of the database. The videos will be useful for most learners but the visual/spatial learning will find them helpful.  I believe the
  • When I teach Boolean operators in a classroom setting I usually ask the class if they use them in a search, so I asked the question on this training module through a poll.   I thought this would be useful for the Bodily/Kinesthetic learner to provide some action (although brief) for the Intrapersonal intelligence for some reflection, and the Interpersonal intelligence to interact with others.
  • I included a Thinglink on the basic features of PubMed. The site is a little overwhelming so I thought it would be useful to point out some of the features. I think this will be useful  for Spatial/Visual.  I will also provide some activity for the Bodily/Kinesthetic learner.
  • Lastly, I included a forum for questions as discussions.  I usually answer a lot of questions when I do an in-person session on evidence-based searching and I wanted to provide the opportunity for individuals to ask questions.  The forum will appeal the interpersonal intelligence by providing interaction and discussion.  It will also appeal to the linguistic learner.
